Emily Hicks was born Feb. 9, 1878, in Salt Lake City. She married Heber Nielson May 10, 1899, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died April 4, 1908, after only nine years of marriage. They had 4 children, Heber, Ralph, Stella and Etta.
At the time of Heber’s death, Emily was living in Grant, Idaho. She then moved to Raymond, Alberta, Canada to live by her brother. Two years later (1911) she moved to Provo, where she resided until her death. She built this home in 1928, just one year before the Stock Market collapse, but through it all, she was able to keep her home.
She was an active member of the LDS Church having served as president of the Relief Society in both the Manavu and Provo Fifth Wards and had been a class leader, a Visiting Teacher and served on the Utah Stake Relief Society board. The Manavu Ward building still stands, around the corner on 6th North. Emily passed away April 1, 1962, having lived in this home for approximately 34 years.

We think she had great taste in building a Craftsman Bungalow home, and feel that the “pioneer wagon” on the face of the fireplace signified her courage as she went through her own trials.
